Development Services


The Development Services Department is comprised of the Planning Division, Building Division, Fire Marshal’s Office, and the GIS Division.  Together these divisions serve not only the citizens of Grant County, but also the visiting public that work and recreate here seasonally throughout the year.  Our focus is on ensuring that the public health, safety, and welfare of our residents and visitors is maintained through our permitting and inspection services. 

Planning Division – The Planning Division is responsible for developing and maintaining Grant County’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan, Shoreline Master Program, and the locally adopted land use codes known collectively as the Unified Development Code.   This Division also processes all land use applications for the unincorporated areas of Grant County.   These applications include land divisions, zone changes, special use permits, shoreline development permits, environmental review to name just a few.  This Division interacts with two hearing bodies at Grant County as well, the Land Use Hearing Examiner, and the Planning Commission. 

Building Division – The Building Division ensures that the built environment protects the general health, safety, and welfare of Grant County.  This Division coordinates building construction plan review activities with several other County offices as well as the Grant County Health District for all structures built in the County that require permits.  Upon issuance of a permit, this Division is also responsible for performing the required building inspections as projects are built.   

Fire Marshal’s Office – The Fire Marshal’s Office is responsible for fire investigations to determine the cause and origin of fire events in Grant County.  Additionally, this Division performs permit plan review and inspection services for certain elements of construction associated with other building permits.  This Division also performs Fire Prevention outreach through its services to help educate the public on matters of fire safety. 

GIS Division – The Geographic Information System (GIS) Division provides the County with its geographic mapping services.  This Division supports all other offices at Grant County with technical mapping needs, consolidates data sources from various local, state, and federal entities and provides that data in a geographic depiction (map).  The GIS Division is also responsible for site address assignment through the unincorporated areas of the County.
